The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
